Iran has yet to make a final decision regarding its participation in the tournament, and FIFA is reportedly considering all options, including withdrawal. One of the proposed ideas is an intercontinental playoff featuring two European teams (one of which would be Italy) along with Jamaica and Bolivia (the two losing finalists in the intercontinental playoff).

Zambolli seems to have a different opinion, advocating for the exclusion of Iran and the direct inclusion of Italy. In statements to the Financial Times, he revealed, “I suggested to President Trump and FIFA President Infantino that Italy replace Iran in the 2026 World Cup.”

He added, “I am of Italian descent, and it would be a dream come true for me to see the Azzurri in a tournament hosted by the United States.”

He added, “Thanks to Italy’s four World Cup titles, this historical record and their prominent position in the world of football justify their participation in the competition in this way.”

It is worth noting that Iran has announced its squad for the World Cup, but has not yet officially notified FIFA of its intention to travel to the United States. Meanwhile, Trump has stated that it would be best for the Iranian national team to withdraw, while Iranian officials are demanding that their World Cup matches be held in Mexico.
