Nico Schlotterbeck has denied rumors circulating about his imminent contract renewal with Borussia Dortmund, opening the door to a possible departure in the upcoming summer transfer window.
For the past two weeks, German newspapers have reported that the German defender has reached a verbal agreement with Dortmund to extend his contract until 2031, and that it is only a matter of time before an official announcement is made.
After playing in Germany’s friendly against Ghana on Monday, Schlotterbeck responded to these rumors, saying, “I have to deny everything that has been said. Unfortunately, we haven’t reached that point (agreeing on all the details of the renewal).”
He added, “I will make my final decision in a few weeks, but I have been discussing this with Sebastian Kehl (the sporting director) for a long time, and now he has left Dortmund.”
He continued, “I have to see what happens. I will speak with Uli Bock (the new sporting director), but it’s not the right time yet.”
“It’s bad news for Dortmund fans right now, but they should know that the situation isn’t easy for me either,” he added.
In the background, Real Madrid is closely monitoring Schlotterbeck’s situation, hoping he will refuse to renew his contract. This would then trigger negotiations between the Spanish club and Dortmund, which are expected to be straightforward, as the German’s contract at Signal Iduna Park expires in the summer of 2027. His club would welcome selling him immediately to recoup some money rather than losing him for free the following year.
