English press reports indicate that Crystal Palace’s management is working to appoint former England manager Gareth Southgate to take over the London club following the departure of Oliver Glasner.
The Austrian coach had announced his departure from Crystal Palace at the end of the season, and in recent days, he attempted to expedite his exit from Selhurst Park after his relationship with everyone at the club, including management and fans, completely broke down.
According to recent reports, Palace’s management has identified Southgate as their top choice to temporarily replace Glasner until the end of the current season.
Southgate is considered a prominent player for Crystal Palace during the 1990s, having made over 150 appearances for the London club. His arrival could potentially calm things down somewhat, especially given the widespread fan discontent with Glasner.
The crux of the matter is that Southgate prefers to stay away from coaching for the time being. However, the management is trying to persuade him to accept the position on a short-term contract with the sole aim of saving the club from relegation. They plan to then meet in the summer to discuss extending the contract or terminating the relationship by mutual consent.
It is worth noting that Southgate’s name has been linked to the Manchester United job on more than one occasion since he left his position as England manager last year, with his best achievement being finishing as runners-up in the European Championship twice, in 2020 and 2024.
