Barcelona Falls to Girona, Handing Real Madrid the La Liga Lead

Barcelona suffered their fourth La Liga defeat of the season, losing 2-1 to Girona at the Montilivi Stadium in the final match of Matchday 24.

The Catalan club was coming off a heavy 4-0 defeat to Atlético Madrid in the Copa del Rey semi-final, and a win against Girona was crucial to regain their footing.

Barça started the match strongly, with Lamine Yamal missing a penalty in the final minute of the first half.

In the second half, Pau Cubarsi gave Barcelona the lead in the 59th minute with a header, but Girona quickly equalized in the 62nd minute through Thomas Lemar.

As the match drew to a close, Ferran Beltrán scored Girona’s second goal with a powerful shot that Juan García could only watch as it nestled into the back of the net in the 86th minute.

There was considerable controversy surrounding the validity of Beltrán’s goal due to an initial foul on Jules Koundé, but VAR ultimately confirmed the goal.

The biggest beneficiary of this result was Real Madrid, who secured the top spot in La Liga and returned to it for the first time since last October.

Barcelona’s points tally remained at 58, placing them second, two points behind leaders Real Madrid.

Girona, meanwhile, moved further away from the relegation zone, reaching 29 points and occupying 12th place.
