Bayern Munich seems poised to finally break its German Cup curse, having reached the semi-finals for the first time in six years.
The Bavarian club hosted RB Leipzig at the Allianz Arena in the quarter-finals on Wednesday evening, securing a 2-0 victory thanks to goals from Harry Kane and Luis Diaz.
Bayern Munich’s last German Cup title came in 2020 when they defeated Bayer Leverkusen 4-0 in the final at the Olympic Stadium in Berlin.
Since then, the Bavarians have suffered some memorable cup defeats.
In 2021, Bayern were eliminated in the second round by Holstein Kiel on penalties, then suffered a humiliating 5-0 defeat to Borussia Mönchengladbach in the second round in 2022, before being knocked out by Freiburg in the 2023 quarter-finals with a 2-1 loss.
What’s most memorable is Bayern’s 2023 cup exit against third-division side Saarbrücken, losing 2-1 in the second round. Last season, they were eliminated by Xabi Alonso’s Bayer Leverkusen in the round of 16.
Now, Bayern Munich have qualified for the semi-finals, joining Stuttgart (the defending champions), Freiburg, and Bayer Leverkusen.
The draw for the German Cup semi-finals will take place on February 22.
