CAF Announces Historic Penalty Against Senegal Following AFCON 2025 Final Incidents

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has imposed the largest fine in African football history on the Senegalese Football Federation (FESAFE) following the incidents that occurred during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations final at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat.

Senegal’s players walked off the pitch for several minutes after Morocco was awarded a last-minute penalty. They returned, but Brahim Diaz failed to convert the spot-kick. Senegal went on to win the title thanks to a goal by Pape Gueye in the first period of extra time.

CAF imposed a total fine of $615,000, broken down as follows: $300,000 for the fans’ misconduct, another $300,000 for the players’ and coaching staff’s unsportsmanlike conduct, and a final $15,000 for the team’s misconduct after five players received yellow cards during the final.

Meanwhile, Senegal coach Pape Thiaw was suspended for five matches (CAF competitions, not World Cup matches) and fined $100,000, while Elman Ndiaye and Ismaila Sarr each received two-match suspensions (also CAF competitions).

Morocco also faced sanctions, with the Royal Moroccan Football Federation fined $315,000 for the inappropriate conduct of ball boys during the final, the misconduct of players and staff during the VAR review area, and the use of laser pointers by Moroccan fans.

Finally, Achraf Hakimi was suspended for two matches, while Ismail Saïbari received a three-match ban and a $100,000 fine.
