The Athletic has revealed advanced negotiations between Liverpool and Tottenham regarding the London club’s potential signing of Andy Robertson during the current winter transfer window.
Initially, Tottenham wanted to sign Robertson on a free transfer next summer when his contract with the Reds expires. Talks with the player began, and things were progressing well.
However, in the last few hours, Tottenham moved to finalize the deal immediately this winter, driven by manager Thomas Frank’s insistence on strengthening the left flank now rather than waiting until next summer.
Robertson has a very strong relationship with Liverpool, and the player doesn’t want to leave the club in a difficult position. Liverpool, for their part, greatly appreciate everything the third captain has contributed. Therefore, neither side will stand in the way of the other, and they will work together to determine what is best for all parties. This makes it highly likely that the Scottish international will leave this winter.
Undoubtedly, the prospect of Robertson leaving for a fee this winter, rather than for free next summer, is the biggest incentive for Liverpool’s management to accept Tottenham’s offer, especially given that negotiations are reportedly at an advanced stage between all parties involved.
Liverpool wouldn’t face a real crisis if the 33-year-old were to leave this winter, and they wouldn’t be forced to enter the winter transfer market to replace him, as the Reds already have left-back Milos Krkic, in addition to Kostas Tsimikas, who is currently on loan at Roma.
Robertson joined Liverpool in the summer of 2017 from Hull City, and since then he has become a Reds legend in every sense of the word, achieving numerous accolades such as two Premier League titles and a Champions League title.
To date, Robertson has made 363 appearances for Liverpool in all competitions, scoring 12 goals and providing 68 assists.
