Bayern Munich demolished Wolfsburg 8-1 on Sunday in the Bundesliga, further cementing their lead at the top of the table as the Bundesliga resumed after the winter break.
The goal fest began in the fifth minute when Kilian Fischer inadvertently deflected Luis Diaz’s cross into his own net. This marked Wolfsburg’s third consecutive own goal in three league matches, setting a new Bundesliga record.
Despite the difficult start, the visitors responded well in the 15th minute when Dzenan Pejčinović equalized after a brilliant passing move that sliced through the Bayern defense.
Luis Diaz put the home side back in front after half an hour, and then Michael Ulise to add his name to the scoresheet with a superb curling shot, his eighth goal of the season. Wolfsburg, seemingly cursed, then conceded their fourth own goal in their last three league games in the 53rd minute when Moritz Jens deflected Ulise’s cross into his own net.
Raphael Guerreiro and Harry Kane scored two goals in quick succession within 80 seconds, before Ulise added his second in the 76th minute. Leon Goretzka completed the rout with the eighth goal in the 88th minute.
This victory is Bayern’s biggest ever against Wolfsburg, who have never beaten the Bavarians at the Allianz Arena. Vincent Kompany’s men now sit atop the Bundesliga table with 44 points, 11 points clear of second-placed Borussia Dortmund.
