Real Madrid announced in an official statement that Kylian Mbappé has suffered a left knee injury that will keep him sidelined for a period of time.
The French international underwent an MRI scan on Wednesday morning, which confirmed a sprain in his left knee. He will require an intensive rehabilitation program to recover.
For its part, the newspaper L’Équipe revealed that this injury is not new, and that Mbappé has been experiencing it for weeks, but he played through the pain and completed the December matches to help Real Madrid overcome their recent difficult period.
Initially, the 25-year-old will be out for three weeks, but the duration could be longer. The situation currently depends solely on how the knee responds to the treatment.
Thus, it is now certain that Real Madrid will enter the Spanish Super Cup without Mbappé, a major blow for Xabi Alonso, who has relied heavily on the Frenchman and who has been his team’s star player for the past six months.
In addition to the Atlético Madrid match and the Super Cup final (should Real Madrid reach it), Mbappé will also miss the La Liga matches against Real Betis and Levante, the Champions League match against Monaco, and the Copa del Rey round of 16 tie. Hopes are high that he will return against Benfica on January 25th.
Mbappé has scored 18 goals in La Liga this season and has netted a total of 29 goals in all competitions in just 24 matches between August and the end of 2025.
Mbappé equaled Cristiano Ronaldo’s record for most goals scored by a Real Madrid player in a calendar year, with 59 goals in 2025.
