Barcelona president Joan Laporta feels great sympathy for Andreas Christensen after his recent injury, to the point of being prepared to reward the player with a new contract to support him psychologically through this difficult period.
Last week, Barcelona announced that the Danish international suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and will be sidelined for at least four months. He will undergo conservative treatment rather than surgery, as per his own wishes.
Laporta greatly appreciates Christensen’s contributions and understands the player’s pain from the numerous injuries he has suffered recently. Given that the ACL injury is a significant blow, it will greatly reduce the number of offers he might receive should he leave Barcelona next summer when his contract expires.
The Catalan president wants to offer the former Chelsea star a new one-year contract, provided he agrees to a pay cut to cope with the economic crisis at Camp Nou. This would give the 29-year-old the opportunity to regain his form and perhaps even stay longer with the Blaugrana.
In general, Barcelona has made signing a new center-back next summer a priority, but this won’t prevent Christensen from staying. He would accept a secondary role if necessary to recover and attract the attention of the world’s top clubs once again.
It’s worth noting that Barcelona could use Christensen’s injury to register a new player in his place during the upcoming winter transfer window. However, the limited time available will likely prevent Laporta’s administration from finding a world-class center-back to replace the Danish international.
