Egyptian media outlets have revealed that Mostafa Mohamed, the Nantes and Egyptian national team star, suffered an injury in the final minutes of Tuesday’s Africa Cup of Nations match against Zimbabwe.
The former Zamalek player entered the game after 30 minutes, replacing Emam Ashour, and the Pharaohs secured a crucial 2-1 victory thanks to Mohamed Salah’s 91st-minute goal.
Reports indicate that Mostafa Mohamed is suffering from a sprained ankle and is unlikely to be fit for the decisive match against South Africa scheduled for next Friday.
The player will undergo comprehensive tests in the coming hours to determine the severity of the sprain and whether he will be available for the final group stage match against Angola or if his return will be delayed until the Round of 16.
With Mostafa Mohamed sidelined, Hossam Hassan will either have to rely on Osama Faisal as the lone striker or, as he did at the start of the Zimbabwe match, on Omar Marmoush.
It is worth noting that left-back Mohamed Hamdi also suffered an injury, but it is most likely not serious, pending the Egyptian Football Association’s announcement of the duration of his absence, as well as that of Mostafa Mohamed.
