A major shift is set to occur in the world of African national team football after the Confederation of African Football (CAF) made some dramatic decisions on Saturday.
According to CAF President Patrice Motsepe, the African Nations Championship (CHAN) will no longer be held.
CHAN will be replaced by a new competition called the African Nations League, to be held every two years. The format of the new competition, and whether it will be modeled after the UEFA Nations League or simply adopt the same name, has not yet been revealed.
According to Motsepe, the new competition is intended to align with the international calendar, unlike the current Africa Cup of Nations, which is held mid-season.
Meanwhile, CAF decided that the Africa Cup of Nations will be held every four years after the 2028 edition in Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania. This is a historic change, as the competition has been held every two years since its inception in the 1950s.
Morocco will host the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations with 24 participating teams between December 21 and January 18, 2026. Ivory Coast is the defending champion of the 2023 edition, which was held on Ivorian soil.
