Florentino Pérez has been relentlessly attacking Barcelona lately, and Cadena COPE has revealed the reasons behind the Real Madrid president’s stance against the Catalan club.
Pérez’s latest statement described Barcelona’s payment of €8 million to former referees’ committee vice-president José Luis Negrera over nearly 20 years as “the biggest scandal in the history of football,” emphasizing his commitment to restoring justice to Spanish football.
According to the report, Pérez is particularly furious with Barcelona due to the agreements reached by Joan Laporta in recent months with UEFA and La Liga president Javier Tebas.
In effect, Barcelona has completely withdrawn its support for Real Madrid’s Super League initiative, a move that has deeply angered Pérez, who views it as a stab in the back, especially since Laporta’s agreements with UEFA have effectively restored relations to their pre-Super League status.
Meanwhile, Pérez’s relationship with Tebas is extremely poor, and the newfound strong relationship between Laporta and the La Liga president suggests an endorsement of his ambitious ideas for developing the competition, ideas that clash with those of the Real Madrid management, who consider them a serious threat to the future of Spanish football.
It’s also worth noting that Pérez doesn’t feel he can remain passive in light of the new evidence that has emerged in the Negrera case. Thus, his public outburst against Barcelona for the three reasons seems logical.
Real Madrid’s next step against Barcelona will be to escalate the matter to FIFA. The Royal Club is preparing a comprehensive report on the refereeing errors, along with the Negrera case documents, to emphasize the deliberate harm the capital club has suffered due to refereeing decisions.
