Bayern Munich confirmed in an official statement Monday morning that Manuel Neuer has suffered an injury and will be sidelined for a period of time.
The legendary German goalkeeper played in Bayern Munich’s 2-2 draw against Mainz on Sunday at the Allianz Arena in the Bundesliga.
According to the statement, Neuer sustained a tear in his right thigh muscle during the match, without specifying the duration of his absence.
Meanwhile, the newspaper Bild revealed that the injury is not as serious as initially appeared, and that the 40-year-old will only miss the match against Heidenheim next Sunday, after which the Bundesliga will enter its winter break.
The Bundesliga will pause from December 21st until January 11th, and Neuer is expected to be fit for the match against Wolfsburg at the Allianz Arena.
In the absence of the legendary goalkeeper, young goalkeeper Jonas Ørbig will take over the task of protecting the Bavarian club’s goal.
It is worth noting that Bayern Munich leads the Bundesliga standings with 38 points, nine points ahead of their closest rivals, RB Leipzig. They also finished second in their Champions League group and reached the quarterfinals of the German Cup, where they will face RB Leipzig.
