In an in-depth interview with CBS’s “60 Minutes,” Lamine Yamal discussed his meteoric rise, his life off the pitch, and one of the biggest decisions he faced at such a young age: choosing between Spain and Morocco.
The Barcelona winger, born in Spain to a family of Moroccan descent, admitted that representing Morocco was a real possibility – especially after the Atlas Lions’ historic run to the World Cup semi-finals. However, when the moment of truth arrived, he insisted he didn’t hesitate. He says his footballing destiny was tied to Spain.
Yamall explained that Morocco’s success naturally led him to consider the other option. But the final decision was based on something deeper: identity, upbringing, and long-held dreams. “I always wanted to play in the European Championship,” he said, something he knew could only be achieved with Spain. This ambition, combined with the environment he grew up in, ultimately shaped his choice.
While he speaks warmly of Morocco, describing it as “my country too,” Yamal emphasized that Spain represents where he grew up, trained, and where his life was shaped. For him, choosing Spain wasn’t just a sporting decision, but a continuation of his personal story.
He summarized his motivations in an interview with “60 Minutes”: “Spain was playing in the Euros, I grew up here, and I feel this is my country.”
During the interview, Yamal explained that he feels ready to lead Spain in the 2026 World Cup. He believes that “La Roja” is a genuine contender and feels that the nation is ready to believe again. Personally, he feels important, confident, and fully prepared for what lies ahead.
