What is the truth about the Zamalek board’s resignation and the Ministry of Sports’ rejection?

The renowned Egyptian media personality Ahmed Shobeir claimed that the Zamalek board submitted its resignation to the Ministry of Sports, but that Minister Ashraf Sobhi refused to accept it.

Zamalek is suffering from a major financial crisis that has prevented it from paying players’ salaries across various sports. The Egyptian government’s decision to reclaim the 6th of October land is considered one of the main reasons for the crisis’s escalation, with debts exceeding 2.5 billion Egyptian pounds.

Amidst public anger and the lack of solutions, Shobeir stated that the Zamalek board, headed by Hussein Labib, had indeed submitted its resignation to the Ministry of Sports. However, the response was a firm rejection of the resignation, with the board promising to help find solutions.

The official spokesperson for the Egyptian Ministry of Sports, Mohamed El-Shazly, responded, confirming that Shobeir’s claims were baseless.

El-Shazly stated in a press release, “The news circulating about the resignation of the Zamalek board, headed by Hussein Labib, or any of its members, or the Ministry of Youth and Sports’ refusal to accept it, is completely false. This simply did not happen.”

He added, “The Ministry of Youth and Sports maintains an equal distance from all clubs, and Zamalek, like other clubs, is suffering from a financial crisis. The Ministry of Sports is fulfilling its responsibilities towards everyone.”

It is worth noting that the Egyptian judiciary will issue its ruling next month regarding the withdrawal of the 6th of October land from Zamalek.
