Hansi Flick will not be on the bench for Barcelona’s match against Real Madrid on Sunday, October 26, at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium in the tenth round of La Liga.
The German coach received a red card in the closing minutes of Barcelona’s match against Girona on Saturday, and will therefore be suspended for at least one match (depending on the referee’s decision), according to La Liga regulations.
Flick’s dismissal came after he protested against some refereeing decisions. After being shown the red card, he became furious, realizing he would not be in El Clásico, a defeat for Barça by all accounts.
Flick is likely to receive a double punishment after cameras caught him making an obscene gesture to celebrate the winning goal.
This is Flick’s first red card this season with Barcelona in all competitions.
Flick has only been sent off once in total, last year against Real Betis, also for protesting against the referee.
Flick has a very impressive record in El Clásico, having played four matches against Real Madrid, winning all four: two in La Liga, one in the Spanish Super Cup final in Saudi Arabia, and one in the Copa del Rey final.
Barcelona defeated Girona 2-1 thanks to a goal from Ronald Araujo, who Flick fielded at the end of the match as a striker in the absence of Robert Lewandowski and Ferran Torres due to injury.
