Although Cristiano Ronaldo is Kylian Mbappé’s role model, he was also the main reason the French star didn’t join Real Madrid in 2017, preferring Paris Saint-Germain’s offer.
Mbappé’s talents were evident at the age of 18 with Monaco, leading the French club to a domestic league title and a Champions League semi-final. He quickly became the talk of the world and a target for all the major European clubs at the time.
In statements to Movistar, Mbappé revealed what happened during that period and how he ended up at PSG, saying, “When I decided to leave Monaco, almost every club in Europe approached me about joining them.”
He added, “I was very clear at the time: I wanted to play and participate regularly. Whereas at Real Madrid, there was Benzema, Cristiano, and Bale. I didn’t want to sit on the bench.”
He concluded, “I realized that Real Madrid, with all due respect, wouldn’t be able to play me in every match, so moving to Paris Saint-Germain was the most logical and best option at the time.”
Mbappé’s seven-year career with PSG spanned a period of seven years, during which he won every domestic title and numerous individual achievements. He then moved to Real Madrid for free in the summer of 2024, beginning a major new chapter in his career.
