Spanish Referee to officiate Al Ahly vs. Zamalek match in Egyptian League

The Egyptian Referees Committee has brought in a Spanish refereeing team to officiate the Al Ahly vs. Zamalek match next Monday, in the ninth round of the Egyptian League.

According to Egyptian media reports, referee Alejandro Muniz will officiate the highly anticipated match, scheduled to take place at Cairo International Stadium.

Muniz, a 34-year-old Spanish referee, made his La Liga debut in 2021. While he is not considered one of La Liga’s elite referees, he is a consistent presence every week and has had virtually no notable disasters.

Muniz has officiated four matches this season: two in La Liga (Villarreal vs. Real Oviedo and Levante vs. Real Betis) and two in the early stages of the Champions League.

So far this season, Muniz has issued 14 yellow cards in four matches, in addition to two red cards.

Over the course of his career, Muniz has officiated 77 matches in the Spanish league, and he has never previously refereed in the Arab region.

It’s worth noting that refereeing was the reason Al Ahly withdrew from a match against Zamalek in the Egyptian League last year, after Mahmoud El Khatib’s management insisted on bringing in a foreign referee. Mahmoud Bassiouni was appointed to referee the match last March.

Zamalek currently leads the Egyptian League standings with 17 points, five points ahead of sixth-place Al Ahly, with coach Emad El Nahhas’ squad having one game less.
