Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca shocked Blues fans by announcing a lengthy absence for one of the Blues’ most prominent stars this season due to injury.
Liam Delap suffered the injury in Chelsea’s final match before the international break against Fulham, causing major drama in the summer transfer window following the Blues’ attempts to block his transfer to Bayern Munich.
Initial reports indicated that Delap would need eight weeks to recover and play, but Maresca revealed that the injury was worse than expected, and his absence would extend further.
The Italian coach said in his press conference ahead of Saturday’s Brentford match, “Unfortunately, Delap will be out for between 10 and 12 weeks. We are very sorry for this long absence.”
He added, “We considered Delap to be a very important and effective attacking addition, but now we have to adapt to the situation and find alternative solutions.”
Delap joined Chelsea last summer for €35 million from Ipswich Town, but has yet to score in his first three Premier League appearances for the London club.
