Marc Guehi almost ended up as a new Liverpool player in the final hours of the transfer window, but at the last minute, Crystal Palace blocked the deal. The player will remain at Selhurst Park until the end of his contract in the summer of 2026.
Liverpool had reached an agreement with Crystal Palace at the start of Deadline Day for Guehi’s transfer for €35 million. The player passed a medical, and was only minutes away from signing his new contract with the Reds.
According to Sky Sports, Crystal Palace reversed their decision to sell Guehi at the last minute due to intense pressure from manager Oliver Glasner to stop the deal.
The historic Austrian coach of the English capital club threatened to resign from his position if Guehi was sold to Liverpool. He explained that losing the England international would mean his team would spend at least January without a reliable central defender, undermining their domestic and European Conference League hopes.
Crystal Palace’s management wanted to make a profit by selling Guehi rather than letting him leave for free next year. However, Glasner’s firm stance ultimately forced them to yield to his wishes, especially since the Austrian received a last-minute offer from Bayer Leverkusen and there were real fears of losing him.
For Guehi, the player is deeply dissatisfied with what happened and feels deeply disappointed. He feels he made a mistake by not putting any pressure on Crystal Palace and continuing to play normally before the deadline. He is expected to issue a statement about the crisis, in which he is also expected to confirm his commitment to his contract despite his deep anger.
