Real Madrid legend and current AC Milan star Luka Modric believes Kylian Mbappé deserved to succeed him in wearing the Number 10 shirt at the club.
After Modric left at the end of his contract, Real Madrid decided to give the Number 10 shirt to Mbappé, given his status as the current star at the Santiago Bernabéu and the expected financial benefits of the move.
The Croatian international spoke about the matter for the first time, saying, “The Number 10 shirt was very special to me, but Real Madrid decided to give it to Mbappé, and I think the club made the right decision.”
He added, “Kylian is one of the best players in the world. He is a friend of mine, and we have developed a good relationship over the past year. I am very happy for him.”
Modrić had given the number 10 shirt to Arda Güler in his final appearance, as if to signal his desire for the Turkish international to succeed him. However, the order to award the number to Mbappé ultimately came from President Florentino Pérez himself.
The French international made his first appearance in the Merengue Legends jersey in the opening La Liga match against Osasuna, where he won and converted a penalty kick, securing a valuable victory for Los Blancos.
