Tuesday evening witnessed a public war of words between Alexander Isak and Newcastle, with each side issuing statements against the other regarding the player’s desire to leave this summer.
Isak had stopped training with Newcastle some time ago and clearly informed the club of his desire to move to Liverpool. However, the Magpies rejected an official offer from the Reds worth up to £120 million.
Isak released a statement confirming that he had previously received a promise from Newcastle officials that he would be allowed to leave, and that he would remain committed to leaving no matter what.
Newcastle responded in an official statement, “We are disappointed to learn of the post published by Alexander Isak this evening. We can clearly state that Alex remains under contract with the club, and no official has given him an official promise that he will be able to leave this summer.”
The statement continued, “All our decisions must be made with the best interests of Newcastle United, the team, and the fans in mind. We have been clear that the terms of his sale this summer have not been met, and we do not expect them to be.”
It is not known exactly what terms the club officials have set for Isak’s sale, but initial talk is of an offer of at least £150 million. It remains unknown whether Liverpool’s anticipated new offer will meet that.
