Hansi Flick believes there is one missing piece at Barcelona that the club must strengthen before the end of the current summer transfer window, so that his team can compete with Europe’s top teams in all competitions.
Barcelona has succeeded in signing Joan Garcia to reinforce the goalkeeping position, Marcus Rashford as a versatile attacking option, and young player Ronnie Bardez, nicknamed “the new Messi” in his native Spain.
According to Sport, Flick has asked Barcelona’s management to sign a new full-back to replace Jules Kounde or Alejandro Balde, if not both.
Barcelona is initially eyeing two players to sign: Inter Milan star Denzel Dumfries and Bayer Leverkusen star Alejandro Grimaldo.
Flick currently favors Grimaldo, believing the left flank is the most important reinforcement. The Spanish player would welcome a return to Barcelona, but the Blaugrana’s attempt to sign him from Leverkusen will be difficult, as the German club is demanding at least €30 million.
Meanwhile, Dumfries would be an ideal option, given his reliability on the left flank as well, but matters are complicated by Inter’s insistence on keeping him and trying to renew his contract.
It’s worth noting that signing either Grimaldo or Dumfries would pose another dilemma for Barcelona: the inability to register a new deal, as they would first need to sell one of their stars to free up space in line with Financial Fair Play regulations.
