Marc-André ter Stegen feels “betrayed” by Barcelona officials, and nothing else, because of the way they are trying to force him to leave. He has decided to stay with the Catalan club despite Joan Laporta’s disapproval, except for one condition.
Barcelona signed goalkeeper Juan Garcia from Espanyol for €25 million, promising him that he would be the team’s first-choice goalkeeper next season. Szczesny also renewed his contract for another year and was told he would be the second-choice goalkeeper, leaving Ter Stegen completely out of the picture.
Barcelona bet that Ter Stegen would leave when he was certain he wouldn’t play, so as not to lose the chance to be Germany’s goalkeeper for the 2026 World Cup. However, the 33-year-old is willing to sacrifice anything to respond to what he sees as a major betrayal by the Blaugrana management.

Ter Stegen rejected 3 major offers
According to Sport, Ter Stegen received several major offers in recent weeks from European clubs participating in the Champions League, but he rejected them all, insisting on continuing with Barcelona.
The first club to attempt to sign the German international was Turkish club Galatasaray. Discussions then took place between Ter Stegen’s representatives and Monaco officials, which lasted only hours and collapsed. Finally, Chelsea inquired about the possibility of signing him, but to no avail.
Ter Stegen’s response to all interested parties was clear: he has no plans to leave Barça. On the contrary, he believes in his chances of overtaking Juan Garcia and becoming the starting goalkeeper at Camp Nou next season.

An impossible condition for Ter Stegen’s departure from Barcelona
Ter Stegen was clear with Barcelona’s management that he would only leave if the remainder of his contract, which exceeds €40 million, was fully paid.
The German’s contract with the Blaugrana still runs until the summer of 2028, and Barça’s management offered him a full year’s salary in exchange for terminating his contract. However, the response was also a refusal, with the option to either keep the contract in full or continue.
Ter Stegen had been open to the idea of leaving Barcelona if informed of these intentions since the end of last season, but the way the news was published and the attacks on his person made him decide to remain stubborn and continue at all costs.
Barça’s management remains hopeful that this crisis will be resolved soon, and are maneuvering with the assumption that Szczesny will renew his contract and that Stegen will not even sit on the bench, in order to pressure the goalkeeper to accept any offer and leave.

Ter Stegen’s career with Barcelona
In July 2014, Ter Stegen joined Barcelona from Borussia Mönchengladbach for €12 million. In his first season at Camp Nou, he was a substitute for Claudio Bravo and only played in the Champions League and Copa del Rey matches.
The Chilean goalkeeper subsequently left, and Ter Stegen became Barça’s primary goalkeeper from 2015 until he suffered a cruciate ligament tear last October.
Ter Stegen received much criticism for his declining performances since 2018, which cost Barcelona dearly, especially in the Champions League.
In total, Ter Stegen played 422 matches with Barça over 11 years, conceding 416 goals. He also won numerous titles with the Catalans, most notably one Champions League title and six La Liga titles.
