Liverpool suffered a painful 3–2 defeat to Fenerbahçe, stumbling in Europe just days after losing to Arsenal in the Premier League.
Andoni Iraola’s side twice surrendered the lead in Istanbul on Matchday 4 of the Champions League league phase, suffering their first defeat in the competition this season.
Trey Nyoni opened the scoring for Liverpool in the 25th minute, but the visitors’ celebrations were short-lived as Mason Greenwood equalised for the hosts four minutes later.
Alexander Isak restored Liverpool’s advantage in the 69th minute, only for Fenerbahçe to respond again through Archie Brown, who levelled in the 73rd.
The Turkish side completed their comeback when Vedat Muriqi scored the winner in the 79th minute, securing a valuable victory just 10 minutes after they had been trailing.
It was Liverpool’s second consecutive defeat across all competitions, following Sunday’s 1–0 loss to Arsenal at Anfield, where Kai Havertz scored the decisive goal in the 16th minute.
Liverpool remain on nine points from three wins and one defeat, sitting provisionally fifth in the European standings. They have scored 14 goals and conceded 10 across their four matches.
Fenerbahçe, meanwhile, claimed their first league-phase victory after two draws and a defeat, taking their tally to five points and climbing provisionally to 19th.
Liverpool will look to return to winning ways in Europe when they visit Club Brugge on 25 November, before hosting Porto on Matchday 6, as the race for direct qualification to the round of 16 intensifies.
