The Red Devils squandered a lead during the match played at Elland Road on matchday seven of the Premier League, returning with just a single point that fails to grant their manager the relief he is looking for.
Bryan Mbeumo opened the scoring for United in the 35th minute, capitalizing on a pass from Youri Tielemans, but Dominic Calvert-Lewin leveled for the hosts in the 51st minute, once again denying the visitors the ability to hold onto their lead until the final whistle.
The draw lifted Manchester United’s tally to seven points, provisionally placing them 13th in the table with a disastrous record of just one win, four draws, and two defeats across seven matches, as their 5-2 victory over Ipswich Town back in August feels like a distant memory.
Since that win, United have drawn 2-2 with Everton, lost the derby 0-1 to Manchester City, and subsequently drawn 1-1 by the same scoreline against Fulham, Tottenham, and Leeds, rounding off five consecutive matches without a win in the Premier League.
The picture looks even worse when factoring in all competitions; Michael Carrick has secured only two victories in ten official matches this season and has failed to win any of his last six outings. This run includes elimination from the EFL Cup following a 2-3 defeat to Brighton after leading by two goals, followed by a 0-2 loss to Atlético Madrid in the Champions League.
This record makes the prospect of a dismissal increasingly present around Carrick, despite him guiding the team to a third-place finish last season before being permanently appointed. English reports had previously discussed potential replacements, though David Ornstein recently reported that the board’s backing for the manager remains intact alongside their desire for him to succeed, with no official decision made to remove him.
On the other side, Leeds raised their tally to ten points, provisionally climbing to seventh place and continuing their solid start under Daniel Farke. They have recorded two wins and four draws, suffering defeat only against Arsenal (1-2). They previously defeated Newcastle 4-1 and Nottingham Forest 1-0, while maintaining an unbeaten record across their four home league fixtures.
United now face a crucial week as they attempt to salvage their campaign; they travel to face Italian side Como on Wednesday, October 21, in the Champions League, before welcoming Bournemouth to Old Trafford on Sunday, October 25, for the eighth round of the Premier League—two tests that carry added significance for Carrick’s future.
