The Oman national team secured their place in the semi-finals of the 27th Arabian Gulf Cup (“Gulf 27”) following one of the most chaotic group stage scenarios in tournament history, with disciplinary records ultimately separating them from Iraq after points and goal differences ended completely identical.
Iraq entered the final matchday with four points, requiring only a draw against Saudi Arabia to guarantee qualification. Oman possessed a single point and faced a monumental task: defeating Kuwait while relying on a Saudi victory over Iraq, before entering goal-difference calculations following a 1–1 draw between the two sides on the opening matchday.
Oman’s chances appeared virtually dead when Shabib Al-Khaldi put Kuwait ahead in the sixth minute, combined with a goalless first half between Saudi Arabia and Iraq—a scoreline that temporarily sent the Lions of Mesopotamia through.
However, the second half delivered a dramatic shift. Abdullah Al-Salem put Saudi Arabia ahead in the 54th minute, before Nasser Al-Rawaḥi equalized for Oman in the 65th minute. Abdullah Al-Hamdan doubled Saudi Arabia’s lead against Iraq in the 69th minute, leaving group calculations hanging on a single goal.
The final minutes saw frantic action as Al-Rawaḥi scored his second goal in the 81st minute. While a 2–1 lead was still insufficient for Oman, Musab Al-Shaqsi struck a third goal in the 84th minute to seal a 3–1 victory, coinciding with Iraq’s 2–0 defeat to Saudi Arabia.
Both teams finished the group stage with identical records across every metric: four points, one victory, one draw, one defeat, four goals scored, five goals conceded, a -1 goal difference, and a 1–1 head-to-head draw. Qualification was subsequently decided by the fair play criteria, which favored Oman due to a superior disciplinary record across the three matches, despite receiving five yellow cards against Kuwait.
Saudi Arabia topped Group A with a maximum of nine points, scoring six goals and keeping three clean sheets. Oman finished second with four points, followed by Iraq on four points, and Kuwait at the bottom without points. Oman now await the winners of Group B in the semi-finals following the conclusion of the second group’s matches.
