Morocco have provisionally climbed to fifth in the FIFA World Rankings, overtaking Brazil following the Seleção‘s 1–1 draw against Australia in their opening fixture of the current international window.
The new position remains subject to the live rankings calculation, with the next official FIFA ranking set to be published on October 7, 2026, following the completion of all international window matches.
Morocco entered the international break in sixth place with 1,803.99 points, trailing fifth-placed Brazil (1,804.92 points) by less than a single point, before Brazil dropped ranking points following their friendly draw in Townsville.
With this advancement, the Atlas Lions have matched the highest ranking ever achieved by an African nation since the inception of the FIFA World Rankings; Nigeria previously reached fifth globally in 1994 following their Africa Cup of Nations triumph in Tunisia.
This milestone continues Morocco’s sustained success on the major stage, after becoming the first Arab and African nation to reach the semi-finals at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, followed by a quarter-final run at the 2026 World Cup before being eliminated by France.
Morocco began their recent World Cup campaign with a draw against Brazil, before defeating Scotland and Haiti, eliminating the Netherlands on penalties, and securing a 3–0 win over Canada to reach the last eight.
Head coach Mohamed Ouahbi’s side begin their current campaign against Gabon in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, before visiting Lesotho on September 29 and hosting Ghana in a friendly match in Tangier on October 4.
Meanwhile, Brazil will have an opportunity to reclaim fifth place when they face Australia again on September 29 before taking on India on October 3, leaving the final positions subject to change until all official results are processed.
