Alexis Mac Allister entered the new season facing a clear contradiction: while remaining a core figure in Liverpool’s plans, the midfielder lacks long-term guarantees regarding his future at Anfield.
The Argentine international’s contract runs until the summer of 2028, meaning the club faces no immediate risk of a free transfer departure. However, recent contract extensions granted to teammates Dominik Szoboszlai and Ryan Gravenberch have raised legitimate questions regarding Mac Allister’s position in the board’s long-term priorities.
“I’m not very happy because I haven’t received an offer from the club, unlike some of my teammates. At the same time, I will give everything in every match as long as I am a Liverpool player,” Mac Allister stated.
The midfielder added: “I haven’t made a final decision about my future. I have two years left on my contract, I’m happy here, and I hope to stay longer. But there are many possibilities, and if my journey ends in two years, I will have played for one of the biggest clubs in the world.”
Mac Allister revealed that departure opportunities surfaced during the summer window, but he opted to remain, with his agent communicating his stance to Liverpool officials. The midfielder was linked with potential moves to Manchester City and Atlético Madrid, though neither interest materialized into decisive negotiations or a bid that prompted Liverpool to sell.
Turning to the Ballon d’Or debate, Mac Allister unequivocally backed his national team captain, stating: “I respect all the nominated stars, but what Leo has done for Argentina and football is incredible.”
He continued: “If I had a vote, I would give the Ballon d’Or to Messi without thinking, and in all honesty. I don’t say this just because we are teammates, but because I believe he truly deserves it.”
Messi captained Argentina to the 2026 World Cup final, recording eight goals and four assists across 853 minutes, including two assists in Argentina’s semi-final comeback win over England. He finished as the tournament’s second-highest scorer behind Kylian Mbappé prior to Argentina’s extra-time defeat to Spain in the final.
For Mac Allister, who joined Liverpool in 2023 and has claimed both a Premier League title and an EFL Cup with the club, his comments do not signal an immediate exit request so much as a call for contractual recognition of his status. While his Ballon d’Or pick remains settled, his personal future remains open to all outcomes.
