Football legend Zinedine Zidane made a surprise appearance at the Moulay Hassan Stadium during the Algeria-Sudan match at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
Zidane’s son, Luca Zidane, who benefited from his father’s Algerian heritage, obtained citizenship and joined the Algerian national team for the first time last October, playing in a single match against Uganda in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
Unlike his father, Luca plays as a goalkeeper and currently plays for Granada in the Spanish second division.
Coach Vladimir Petkovic decided to give Luca Zidane the opportunity to start for Algeria in the Africa Cup of Nations during their opening match against Sudan.
It seems that Luca’s father learned of this early and decided to travel to Morocco to attend this very special event and support his son in his first international appearance at such a major regional tournament.
Zidane received a standing ovation from fans in the stadium as soon as the cameras focused on him, reflecting his immense popularity as one of the greatest stars in French and Real Madrid history.
It’s worth noting that the Algerian Football Federation attempted to hire Zidane to coach the national team after the dismissal of Djamel Belmadi, but the legend declined, preferring to wait until after the 2026 World Cup to succeed Didier Deschamps with the French national team.
