Xabi Alonso has admitted that he would “definitely” consider a return to Liverpool at some point in his career.
Alonso is currently under pressure at Real Madrid and could be sacked after just six months in charge if his team loses to Manchester City in the Champions League on Wednesday.
When asked at the pre-match press conference about the possibility of returning to England, specifically to Liverpool, the Spanish coach responded positively.
“I have a connection with English clubs, and certainly with my former club, but at the moment this is where I am (Real Madrid), this is where I want to be,” Alonso said.
He added, “In the future, you never know what might happen.”
Alonso also addressed the recent controversy surrounding Mohamed Salah and Arne Slott, and the Egyptian’s exclusion from matches, stating, “This decision was made at Liverpool. Of course, I’m sure we’re missing many details of what’s happening, and I shouldn’t say anything about it.”
Some English media outlets had speculated that Alonso’s appointment as a replacement for Slott, whose days at Anfield are numbered, would be seriously considered by Liverpool’s management if he were to be dismissed from Real Madrid, unless he manages to turn things around next month.
It’s worth noting that Alonso played for the Reds for five seasons and was a key player in their Champions League victory in 2005 and their FA Cup triumph in 2006.
