With a last-gasp goal from Ben Romdhane, Tunisia officially qualifies for the 2026 World Cup

Tunisia secured a place in the 2026 World Cup after defeating Equatorial Guinea 1-0 in the eighth round of the African qualifiers on Monday evening.

The only goal of the match came from Al Ahly star Mohamed Ali Ben Romdhane in the 94th minute, securing the Carthage Eagles a place at the World Cup in the United States and Canada in Mexico for the seventh time in the country’s history.

With this victory, Tunisia’s points tally rose to 22, 10 points ahead of runner-up Namibia, with only two rounds remaining in the qualifiers, thus mathematically guaranteeing qualification.

This is Tunisia’s third consecutive participation in the 2026 World Cup, after participating in the 2018 edition in Russia and the 2022 edition in Qatar. This is also the second time Tunisia has qualified for the World Cup three times in a row, having done so in 1998, 2002, and 2006.

Tunisia became the second African team to secure qualification for the World Cup, after Morocco, and the Greens are the third Arab team to participate in the 2026 World Cup, alongside Jordan and the Atlas Lions.
