Will Regragui leave Morocco and take over a prestigious French club?

In recent hours, French newspapers have linked Walid Regragui, the current coach of the Moroccan national team, with the Marseille job should Roberto De Zerbi be dismissed in the coming days.

Regragui’s future with the Moroccan national team remains uncertain. The Royal Moroccan Football Federation has yet to make a final decision regarding whether to retain him or dismiss him immediately before the 2026 World Cup, following their loss to Senegal in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations final.

Latest reports suggested an intention to keep Regragui with the Atlas Lions, provided he makes significant structural changes to his coaching staff. However, it was later reported that the coach himself is feeling exhausted and may prefer to leave before June.

Meanwhile, in Ligue 1, Marseille has suffered a series of defeats, most recently a 5-0 loss to Paris Saint-Germain, the biggest defeat in the history of the French Classique. It has been reported that De Zerbi has lost the support of the players in the dressing room, and his dismissal is imminent, with Regragui poised to replace him.

French journalist Marc Michenois, formerly of Le Parisien and with close ties to Marseille, denied these rumors, asserting they were unfounded.

Although Marseille’s sporting director, Mehdi Benatia, has strong connections with Regragui, he has no plans to appoint him as the club’s coach this season, and the matter hasn’t even been discussed within the management.
