Real Madrid star Kylian Mbappé has not fully recovered from the facial injury he sustained in the recent match against Girona, raising the possibility that he will wear a protective face mask again when he plays against Bayern Munich in the second leg of the Champions League quarter-final.
A Girona defender’s elbow to Mbappé’s face caused the French star to bleed, requiring three stitches above his eyebrow and on his forehead. He will need to protect his face as much as possible during the Bayern match and in the coming period to avoid further bleeding.
Despite the severity of the tackle on Kylian Mbappé, neither referee Javier Alberola nor VAR deemed the incident worthy of a penalty, much to the dismay of Real Madrid fans.
According to L’Équipe, Mbappé will not wear a face mask against Bayern. He and Real Madrid’s medical staff have opted for a large bandage on his head.
Despite his injury, Mbappé is eager to make a difference, as Real Madrid must return from the Allianz Arena with a two-goal victory to salvage their season and qualify for the semi-finals, where they would face the winner of the Paris Saint-Germain vs. Liverpool tie.
Mbappé scored Real Madrid’s only goal in the first leg, when the Spanish giants were defeated 2-1 at the Santiago Bernabéu.
