As newspaper revealed the first player to be a casualty of Xabi Alonso’s appointment as Real Madrid coach.
Luka Modrić and Lucas Vázquez have already left, but the decision was made jointly with the club’s management, not at Alonso’s behest.
The first player to leave because of the Spanish coach will be Ferland Mendy.
Alonso is looking for a left-back with attacking qualities and flexibility, and he believes Mendy is not at all suited to his style.
At the same time, reports have spread from within Real Madrid that Mendy himself is uncomfortable with Alonso’s arrival.
The Frenchman realizes he cannot play with a back-three formation, and thus his chances will be slim with Alonso, a statement also confirmed by sources close to the coach.
Real Madrid is reportedly in the process of signing Álvaro Carreras to bolster the left-back position, so even if Mendy stays, he will likely be on the bench.
