Matthew Benham, owner of Brentford FC, revealed that his club nearly signed Omar Marmoush in the summer of 2023 before the deal fell through and he joined Eintracht Frankfurt on a free transfer.
This came during a press interview with Benham, who confirmed that Brentford missed out on several deals that would have brought the club significant profits, both on and off the pitch.
Among the deals Benham regrets most is the Marmoush transfer. He says he was in advanced negotiations with the Egyptian forward to sign him on a free transfer after his contract with Wolfsburg expired.
However, for various reasons, the deal collapsed at the last minute, and the “Egyptian Prince” decided to join Eintracht Frankfurt, where he made history before moving to Manchester City just a year and a half later.
Frankfurt earned €75 million from Marmoush’s sale, and Benham undoubtedly regrets the failed transfer, as his club lost this substantial sum.
Among the stars Brentford could have acquired was Michael Ulise, who opted to join Crystal Palace before moving to Bayern Munich and becoming one of football’s biggest stars in the last two years.
In addition, Brentford missed out on signing Eberechi Eze for £4 million in 2019.
