Egyptian media outlets have reported on negotiations between Al Ahly and Walid Regragui for the Moroccan coach to take over the reins at the Red Castle next season, replacing current coach Jes Thorup.
It has become unlikely that the Dane will leave Al Ahly this season due to the Egyptian club needing to pay approximately €6 million if they were to dismiss him before next June.
Generally speaking, Al Ahly has begun searching for a new coach to lead the team next season, and after names like René Weiler were circulated, Walid Regragui’s name has been added to the list of candidates to lead the Egyptian giants.
However, according to sources close to Regragui, there has been no contact between him and Al Ahly, and all the reports are merely baseless rumors.
The source revealed that Walid Regragui already has several lucrative offers from European and Gulf clubs, which he received officially immediately after announcing his departure from coaching the Moroccan national team.
Regragui is calm and doesn’t want to rush into his next move. It’s clear that coaching in Egypt is out of the question for him, especially since he dreams of working in European leagues.
It’s worth noting that Regragui led Morocco to a fourth-place finish at the 2022 World Cup and also guided his country to the final of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, the winner of which is still undecided and will be determined by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).
