Vinícius Júnior offered an apology to his Real Madrid teammates and supporters following his straight red card during his side’s hard-fought 1-0 victory over Villarreal in La Liga.
The Brazilian international’s substitute appearance—starting from the bench for the first time this season before coming on in the 52nd minute—shifted rapidly from an attempt to regain his spark into a fresh crisis that risks ruling him out of pivotal upcoming matches.
“The joy continues… I apologize to my team and to the fans,” Vinícius wrote on his Instagram account after leaving Real Madrid with ten men during the closing stages of the contest.
However, the Merengue winger subsequently posted an image highlighting several heavy tackles he had endured in previous matches, appending a protest message reading: “And the one who always gets the yellow and red card is Vinícius… what a disgrace.”
The incident erupted after Vinícius scored what initially appeared to be Real Madrid’s second goal, before the video assistant referee summoned the main official to review a prior passage of play in which the Brazilian pulled Nathan Saliba’s hair, leading to the goal being disallowed and a straight red card issued.
Match referee Díaz de Mera noted in his official report that Vinícius pulled his opponent’s hair while the ball was in play but away from active competition between the pair. He further recorded that the player continued protesting loudly and advanced toward him with “aggressive behavior,” requiring teammates to physically restrain him.
According to refereeing expert Iturralde González, Vinícius’s suspension could range between two and three matches subject to the Competition Committee’s ruling, threatening his availability for fixtures against Sevilla and Barcelona, as well as a potential match against Racing Santander.
Yann Diomande scored the winning goal in the 62nd minute before Real Madrid held firm down a man to preserve all three points, though Vinícius’s likely absence from the Clásico at the Camp Nou on October 25 underscores the weight of his actions and subsequent apology.
