UEFA & Topps Launch Unique “Debut Patch” Cards for Champions League First-Timers

According to The Athletic, the patch will appear on the player’s jersey sleeve, integrating the word “Debut” into the tournament’s iconic starball logo, and will be used for the first time during the opening matchday.

A player will not receive the patch simply for being named in the matchday squad; they must actually feature on the pitch, either as a starter or a substitute. Furthermore, a player will wear it only once in their career, even if they transfer to another club later on.

Following the match, the distinctive blue “Debut” section will be removed from the shirt, securely authenticated, packaged, and issued with a certificate of authenticity before being transferred to Topps, the trading card specialist.

Topps will then embed the patch inside a unique 1-of-1 trading card, which the player will sign, turning their Champions League debut into a rare collectible for fans and collectors.

The initiative comes as part of UEFA and UC3’s partnership with Fanatics (the parent company of Topps) alongside a six-year extension (2027–2033) for producing cards, stickers, and trading card games for European competitions.

UEFA views the badge as a tool for clubs and broadcasters to highlight debut moments live on air, while the commercial aspect provides Fanatics and Topps with a high-value, ultra-rare product for the sports memorabilia market.
