UEFA has decided to observe a minute’s silence before all Matchday 1 fixtures of the UEFA Champions League in solidarity with the victims of the devastating flash floods that struck Nepal on August 26.
European football’s governing body announced that the tribute ceremonies will take place prior to every match in the competition this week, coinciding with the launch of the new league phase running from Tuesday through Thursday.
A Message of Solidarity Across Champions League Stadiums
Alongside the minute’s silence, stadiums will display a banner bearing the message: “You Are Not Alone, People of Nepal,” an initiative designed to express the European football community’s unity with those affected by the disaster.
UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin stated: “The entire European football family will stand as one before this week’s matches to express our deepest condolences and support to the people of Nepal.”
He added: “We wish them strength and resilience as they continue to recover from this tragedy and its aftermath.”
The flash floods swept through Himalayan border regions, with preliminary reports pointing to a glacial collapse that triggered massive torrents of water, mud, and debris, destroying homes, roads, bridges, and hydroelectric power infrastructure.
The death toll has surpassed 1,300 according to the latest published statistics, while thousands remain missing as search and rescue operations persist in hard-to-reach areas.
Matchday 1 of the UEFA Champions League kicks off on Tuesday, September 8—headlined by a marquee clash between Real Madrid and Inter Milan—with fixtures continuing through Thursday, September 10.
