UEFA imposes a heavy penalty on Barcelona… but!

Mundo Deportivo reported that UEFA has decided to impose a penalty on Barcelona for violating Financial Fair Play rules.

The British newspaper The Times revealed that UEFA discovered Barcelona had violated Financial Fair Play rules for the second year in a row, and thus it was obligated to impose a heavy penalty on the Catalan club.

UEFA’s initial decision was to impose a €60 million fine on Barcelona, warning the club that repeating such violations would ultimately lead to a heavier penalty, in addition to a ban from European competitions.

In recent days, Catalan president Joan Laporta met with UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin, and discussions between the two parties regarding the fine and Financial Fair Play rules in general went very positively.

Ultimately, after Ceferin was largely convinced by what Laporta had said, he agreed to reduce the penalty to €15 million, provided that Barça continued to comply with UEFA and La Liga rules.

There’s still a chance Barcelona could pay €60 million if it fails to comply with UEFA and La Liga’s strict financial regulations in recent months. However, the initial fine will be €15 million, pending further developments.

This fine is not expected to impact Barcelona’s summer transfer window, especially as the club is in the process of offloading a number of surplus players and creating sufficient financial space to register any new signings.
