Thomas Tuchel criticized England’s performance after a grueling 2-1 World Cup quarterfinal win against Norway, sparking a fiery response from two-goal hero Jude Bellingham. Read the full post-match drama.
Thomas Tuchel believes England got “lucky” after the Three Lions secured a hard-fought 2-1 victory in the World Cup 2026 quarterfinals. Despite guiding the European giants to only their fourth World Cup semifinal in history, the German manager was far from pleased with his team’s display—a critique that triggered a fiery response from Jude Bellingham.
England needed extra time to edge past Erling Haaland’s Norway. Bellingham was undoubtedly the star of the match, netting both goals to rescue his side. Yet, Tuchel remained highly critical of the overall performance.
“We got lucky,” Tuchel said post-match. “We made life very, very difficult for ourselves. The result is fantastic. We are in the last four; it’s amazing, but [I am] not happy with the performance—in every sense.”
He added: “How we played was sloppy, with a lot of technical mistakes, not fast enough, and not repetitive enough.”
When Tuchel’s harsh words were put to Jude Bellingham, the Real Madrid midfielder didn’t hold back: “Yeah well, whatever. It’s difficult out there, it’s a tough shift. All the players have put in a tough shift. My thoughts and appreciation goes to the players out there who put in a great shift.”
Bellingham continued: “Maybe he [Tuchel] doesn’t know what it’s like to play in those conditions against Erling Haaland, Martin Odegaard, Antonio Nusa, and Alexander Sorloth.”
“You can’t win every game popping the ball and making 1,000 passes,” he concluded. “Sometimes you have to win dirty, and we did that today.”
