England manager Thomas Tuchel has confirmed that midfielder Jordan Henderson suffered a “really bad” wrist injury while celebrating the Three Lions’ dramatic World Cup round-of-16 victory over Mexico.
The 36-year-old Brentford midfielder appeared to land awkwardly after falling from the advertising hoardings at Mexico City’s historic Azteca Stadium following England’s thrilling 3-2 win. He was later pictured leaving the pitch on a stretcher.
“Jordan [Henderson] just fell over and injured his wrist. It looks really bad,” Tuchel said after the match.
He added: “It’s a quite serious injury and it doesn’t fit to the evening that Jordan is now not with us. The doctor told me he is in hospital.”
England’s Growing Injury and Suspension List
Henderson’s World Cup campaign had been limited to a brief six-minute appearance at the end of England’s Group L victory over Panama.
The veteran midfielder is now likely to join defender Reece James, who picked up a hamstring injury in England’s opening match, on the sidelines. Furthermore, the Three Lions will also be without Jarell Quansah for their next match after the defender received a straight red card during the victory against Mexico.
England’s next match will be a highly anticipated quarter-final tie against Norway in Miami next Saturday.
