Mohamed Murad, the media coordinator for the Egyptian national team, confirmed that Mahmoud Hassan Trezeguet will miss the Pharaohs’ upcoming quarter-final match in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations due to injury.
Trezeguet left the second half of Egypt’s Round of 16 match against Benin after sustaining what appeared to be a serious injury. Subsequent tests revealed a torn ankle ligament.
In statements made on Tuesday, Murad indicated that it is impossible for Trezeguet to be fit for the quarter-final scheduled for Saturday. However, efforts will be made to get him ready for the semi-final should the Pharaohs advance.
Ankle ligament injuries typically require at least two weeks to recover (for a grade one tear) and a maximum of six months (for a grade three tear). Therefore, it is highly unlikely that the Al Ahly star will participate again with Egypt in the AFCON.
It should be noted that left-back Mohamed Hamdy’s participation in the Africa Cup of Nations with the Egyptian national team has also ended after he was diagnosed with a torn cruciate ligament.
The Egyptian national team will face the winner of the Ivory Coast vs. Burkina Faso match in the quarterfinals, after defeating Benin 3-1 on Monday at the Adrar Stadium.
