Tottenham Hotspur have officially completed the signing of Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali in a staggering, club-record transfer deal that could reach a total value of £100 million.
Newcastle had initially rejected an opening bid of around £80 million from Spurs. However, the two London and Tyneside clubs eventually reached an agreement structured as an initial £92.5 million fee plus an additional £7.5 million in performance-related add-ons.
“I’m very happy to be here,” Tonali said in his first official interview after signing his contract. “People talked about interest from four or five clubs, but for me, there was only one choice.”
He added: “I spoke with [Roberto] De Zerbi for close to two hours about the club, the fans, the stadium, and our football project. It was like magic because I knew immediately that I had to sign for Tottenham.”
Spurs’ Ambitious Summer Spending Spree
The 26-year-old Italy international becomes Tottenham’s latest high-profile reinforcement, joining fellow big-money signing Mateus Fernandes, who recently moved to Spurs from West Ham United in a massive £85 million deal.
It is worth noting that Tonali originally arrived in the Premier League in July 2023, joining Newcastle from AC Milan for £55 million.
