Inter Miami’s management has opened negotiations with one of Lionel Messi’s closest players, hoping to secure his services during the current summer transfer window.
The Flea’s contract with Inter Miami expires at the end of this year, amid reports of Saudi attempts to sign him, and other reports suggesting he prefers a new experience outside the United States.
According to journalist Fabrizio Romano, Inter Miami is negotiating with Atletico Madrid to sign Rodrigo De Paul.
De Paul is one of Lionel Messi’s closest players and is known for his defensive displays against the Argentine legend in matches, particularly during the 2022 World Cup.
Inter Miami wants to keep expectations high, so the club is working to recruit a select group of players, led by De Paul, who, in principle, doesn’t mind the idea of playing alongside Messi for the first time at a club level.
Meanwhile, signing De Paul could be an additional incentive for Messi to stay with Inter Miami, especially since he will join a group of close friends at the American club, including Luis Suárez, Jordi Alba, and Sergio Busquets.
The 31-year-old’s contract with Atlético Madrid runs until next summer, making negotiations more flexible between the two parties. The Spanish club fears that the player will ultimately not renew his contract and leave for free next year.
