Former Bayern Munich star Thomas Müller has confirmed that he had hoped to join Barcelona during the last summer transfer window after his contract with the Bavarian club expired, but he did not receive the expected call from coach Hansi Flick at the time.
Müller announced the end of his legendary journey with Bayern Munich when his contract expired last summer, eventually moving to Vancouver Whitecaps, a Canadian club competing in the MLS. The German legend has repeatedly emphasized that he only wanted to continue in Europe under certain conditions.
In a new statement, Müller said, “The truth is, I wanted to leave Europe after leaving Bayern Munich. I probably had only one or two options in mind that would have kept me here.”
He added, “Flick knows me well, and if he had called me and I liked the project at Barcelona, I would have envisioned my future there.”
He added, “It’s a top-class club, and everyone knows what people expect from you when you wear their shirt.”
Müller is one of the players who has scored the most goals against Barcelona in history, having scored eight goals in ten Champions League matches against the Blaugrana, winning eight of those matches against the Catalan club.
Although Müller wouldn’t have earned much money and fit within Barcelona’s current budget, Joan Laporta’s administration currently prefers to rely on young players, so the German international has never been an option.
