Manchester United were ready to bring in the best players in the world, Jürgen Klopp revealed in a recent media interview, explaining that this was the main reason he turned down the Old Trafford job.
Klopp left Dortmund in the summer of 2015 after a long career in which he won two Bundesliga titles, the German Cup, and reached the Champions League final. He immediately became a target for all major European clubs.
At the time, Manchester United was the first to attempt to secure the services of the German coach. A meeting took place between Klopp and then-CEO Ed Woodward, but negotiations ultimately failed.
Regarding his reason for turning down the United job, Klopp said, “I heard things I didn’t like during the meetings. We’ll bring you all the players you want. We’ll bring you this, this, and this.”
He added, “I didn’t want Paul Pogba back, I didn’t want Cristiano Ronaldo back. That wouldn’t work. Their idea was to sign stars and top players, but they never talked about football.”
He concluded, regarding why he took over at Liverpool, “A purely football project came to me, so I moved there.”
