The Spanish Referees Committee has ruled that Ferran Beltrán’s goal for Girona against Barcelona in the final minutes of Monday’s match was invalid and should have been disallowed by VAR.
The second goal involved a strong challenge by Claudio Echeverry on Jules Koundé before the ball reached Beltrán, who unleashed a powerful shot that beat Juan García and led to Barcelona’s 2-1 defeat.
According to Mundo Deportivo, the committee confirmed that Echeverry’s challenge warranted a foul in favor of Barcelona, and that VAR should have intervened and informed the referee of the foul that directly led to the goal.
The committee added, “This moment preceding Ferran Beltrán’s decisive goal was part of the same play leading up to the goal, meaning it falls within the scope of mandatory VAR review.”
Ultimately, this admission will not change what happened; Barcelona will remain defeated, and have already dropped to second place, two points behind current leader Real Madrid.
